How It Works
Cashu Ecash, explained
Cashu is an open-source ecash protocol built on Bitcoin. Inspired by David Chaum's 1982 blind signature scheme, it brings true digital cash to Bitcoin — private, instant, and bearer-based.
Deposit to a Mint
You send Bitcoin (typically via Lightning) to a Cashu mint — an entity that holds Bitcoin and issues ecash tokens in return. Anyone can run a mint.
Blind Signatures
The mint signs your ecash tokens using blind signatures — a cryptographic technique where the mint validates tokens without ever seeing who owns them or how they're spent.
Spend & Redeem
Use ecash tokens like digital cash. Transfer them peer-to-peer instantly. Redeem back to Bitcoin anytime via Lightning. The mint can never link your spending to your deposit.
What are ecash tokens? — Digital bearer instruments, like physical cash but for Bitcoin. Whoever holds the token controls the funds. They're stored on your device, not in a bank. Tokens are denominated in satoshis and can be sent as easily as copying and pasting text.
Nostr Native
